We know what we want: a pitch-perfect cocktail dress in oyster-hued stretch silk with a flattering nipped-in waist. Too bad it exists only in our imaginations.
Now we?re having our dream dress custom-made by Borris Powell, a longtime presence on the Chicago fashion scene who just upped his game by opening a new showroom and retail space in a West Loop loft.
The self-taught designer first learned to sew in a class at Jo-Ann Fabrics, and in 2011, Powell?s star began to rise when he won the Oscar Designer Challenge with his ?black swan? evening gown.
Powell?s blend of style chutzpah and Alabama-bred charm--plus an exacting eye for cut and construction--makes him a fabulous fashion conspirator.
The easiest way to put his skills to work? Pick a piece from the just-launched Borris Powell ready-to-wear collection (carried at Vile & Valiant in West Town; prices range from $80 for a top to about $180 for a dress and $400 for a trench coat). Then ask for a different color, length or neckline--whatever it takes to bring your vision to life. (Powell also designs garments from scratch; prices start at about $500.)??
All your new frock needs is a tag that reads: Made especially for you by Borris. ??
