Salvage One
Meg Caswell loves shopping at Salvage One in the design district.

Since winning HGTV?s Design Star and becoming the host of Great Rooms, Chicagoan Meg Caswell has morphed from interior guru into full-fledged media personality.

Her new series, America?s Best Kept Secrets, will premiere later this month, and we can?t wait to queue up the DVR.

In the first episode, Caswell scours the country to find inspiration from well-designed products and places: Think motorcycles at Big Tony?s Chopp Shop in suburban Crete or handcrafted speakers from Specimen Products in Humboldt Park.

Caswell recently tipped us off to three more Chicago discoveries she thinks should be on our radars.

Botti Studio Peek in the windows of this Evanston stained-glass studio to see what?s under way--Botti handles everything from Tiffany dome restorations to new windows for churches. Caswell says stained glass isn?t just for old Victorian houses; the studio also takes orders for custom contemporary designs. 919 Grove St., Evanston; 800-524-7211 or bottistudio.com

Salvage One Caswell credits this mammoth design district store with starting the preservation-minded design movement in Chicago. Pick up vintage lighting, tile and even beautiful old sinks to incorporate into modern spaces. 1840 W. Hubbard St.; 312-733-0098 or salvageone.com

Demolition Promotions This company hosts weekend estate sales at suburban homes slated for teardown. Find things you wouldn?t expect--appliances, hardware and even flagstones and mature shrubbery and trees. Addresses announced Thursdays prior to sales; 630-880-6328 or demo-pro.com
