A North Side favorite migrates downtown
With its sea of high-rises and hospitals, Streeterville lacks the local flavor of great Chicago neighborhoods like Hyde Park and Logan Square. But a pioneering coffee shop is sometimes all it takes to turn the tide.
Enter Dollop, a soaring, modern café at the base of an all-glass tower that nevertheless recreates the artful community feel of the original Uptown location--and infuses a shot of character into this area?s all-chain landscape.
Need to spend the morning noodling with a PowerPoint? Dollop?s long communal tables and counters are nice places to set up shop with a laptop, but the small stools are unforgiving--so snag one of the leather armchairs closer to the door instead.
For a distraction from your screen, order from the all-local menu. We paired Metropolis coffee ($2, brewed with a Woodneck Pour Over) with a wonderfully gooey peanut butter, banana and honey breakfast bagel ($5, bagels are from NYC Bagel Deli).
Between Dollop?s ultracool vibe (and indie playlist) and the new Brooklyn-style pizza joint across the street, we can?t help but feel that Streeterville is ripe to become a hipster hot spot.
