The Life Aquatic
A local institution gets out of town
Sometimes you have you tear yourself away from the oceanfront cabana and inject a little exploration into your vacation.
Chicago?s own Shedd Aquarium is breaking out of its octagon with Shedd Adventures, a new luxury travel program that sends everyday nature lovers on trips to South America, Mexico and more with the aquarium?s wildlife-conservation experts.
Looking to get out of town now? Sign up pronto for Costa Rica: Reefs and Rainforests (January 26 to February 5; $4,295), a trip that includes a canopy tour of the Monteverde cloud forest and whale-watching on the Pacific coast. (Airfare from Chicago is not included in package prices, but the Shedd will book travelers on a group flight if they wish.)
Or book a trip leaving in the spring or fall. For instance, this April you can board a Galapagos-bound sailboat (Exploring Darwin?s Enchanted Isles, April 19-28; starting at $5,759) to snorkel with sea turtles at the base of a sunken volcano. Or in November you can hop an Amazon Voyage to see red howler monkeys and pink dolphins by day and nocturnal wildlife after dark (November 1-10; starting at $4,566).
Just be sure to leave the beach reads at home.
