If you missed EXPO Chicago in September, this weekend offers another opportunity for art browsing at Navy Pier--only this time with a funkier and in many cases more affordable spin.
Now in its 19th year, the SOFA (Sculptural Objects, Functional Art + Design) fair begins its three-day run today with work for sale from nearly 70 participating galleries from 10 countries, plus exhibits by museums, universities and arts organizations. (Tickets $15 to $25.)
What we like about this fair is the way it gets us thinking about mediums other than traditional painting. SOFA is a textural feast, showcasing works in wood, silver, ceramic, textiles and more. Glass art will make a particularly strong showing this year in celebration of the 50th anniversary of America’s Studio Glass Movement.
And then there’s our favorite part: the boundary-pushing furniture being exhibited by galleries from New York, California, Chicago and beyond. Even if none of it ends up in your house anytime soon, you’ll get a glimpse at the future of interiors--and be inspired to pick out something artful the next time you’re looking for a living-room staple.
