Chicago women are an excellent match for the kind of high-minded cozying up we want to do in British designer Eskandar’s chic and beautifully made clothing--most of it so unstructured that it could double as loungewear.
This is not to say we don’t wish to look fabulous as winter rolls into town. It’s just that comfort is our friend, and we’ll soon be too cold not to admit it.
After becoming a top-selling brand in Chicago’s luxury department stores, Eskandar has just put down roots with a stand-alone boutique on newly hopping Walton Street.
At first glance, the clothes do appear pajama-like. But try them on and you’ll find the cut and drape are expertly done, and the fabrics--softest cashmere, silk and wool--are too lovely to take off. (You get what you pay for: Sweaters and printed silk blouses hover around $1,200, while one gorgeous black cashmere poncho is nearly $5,000.)
Skirt the sticker shock by checking out the small selection of housewares near the back of the store, which includes British ceramics, antique silver serving pieces for $200, assorted French glassware for about $75 a stem and tall, sturdy candles for $50.
If we have to cover up, we’d like to do it in something this fabulous.
