The new Sofia is the latest phase in an evolution that’s carried the boutique from its days as a vintage paradise on Clark Street through its boho-glam years on Oak and finally into this sleeker, more grown-up moment in its current location a block south, on Walton.
Owner Ashley Zisook still loves a statement piece as much as ever, but she’s gotten in touch with her chicer side as she, too, has grown up.
Gone are the cheeky Lollapalooza-ready looks that packed the racks on Oak Street; in their place are stacks of soft sweaters that shimmer, practical fold-in-half flats by Yosi Samra ($60, great for walks to and from the office) and separates like a pretty tassel-print silk blouse by Mara Hoffman ($220).
Zisook bought most of Sofia’s present mix with a desk-to-dinner lifestyle in mind, and we can easily see a melon-red suit by new designer Shona Joy (pants, $220; jacket, $341) transitioning from the board room to cocktails at Maude’s. And in case you really want to ratchet up the style quotient, look just a few hangers over for an outrageously cool, cream studded leather jacket from Simone ($1,825).
After all, grown-up girls still want to have fun.
