The beauty of Scandinavian design, says North Shore resident Katie Cory, is that the best things are reduced to their simplest, most perfect shapes. A Danish mug--practical and beautiful--will fit perfectly into the palm of your hand. It will become the only mug you?ll reach for, year after year.
Cory recently opened a Winnetka store that celebrates the kinds of things her Swedish mother raised her to appreciate; the difference is that Skändal veers away from the traditional elements of Scandinavian fashion--knitted mittens, little orange horses--in order to bring edgy new designers to the forefront.
Cory has sourced 45 lines from Denmark and Sweden. The racks inside her bright, white boutique are stocked with separates by Trine Kryger Simonsen, chicer-than-Hunter rubber boots and rain gear by Ilse Jacobsen and dresses by House of Dagmar, last year?s winner of Scandinavia?s highest design award. There are also housewares and gifts, including rich linens by Ekelund Weavers and unusual tabletop items by Design House Stockholm.
We?re heading north to learn a thing or two about winter wardrobing.
