The now-grown children who had Vivian Maier as their nanny on the North Shore of Chicago from the 1950s to 1970s have described her as an unconventional woman for the time: solitary and private but with a tell-it-like-it-is manner, usually wearing men?s shoes and always trolling the city to take photographs she showed to no one.
Maier became an unlikely art-world celebrity after some 100,000 of her negatives were discovered--mostly undeveloped--in a storage locker in 2007, a year before her death. (She never saw her work recognized or published.)
The new book Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows is scheduled for release this month, and two exhibits opening this week celebrate Maier?s curiosity and the devotion to her craft that left us with a fresh view of what urban America was like during her most creative years.
At Thomas Masters Gallery, an exhibit that opens Friday echoes chapters of the book, with sections devoted to ?Maxwell,? ?Beach,? ?1968,? ?Downtown? and more. On Saturday, the Chicago History Museum opens a show of Maier?s now-famous Chicago street photography presented at larger-than-life scale.
We love the reminder that even if the pursuit of a passion is just for you, there?s no telling what it might blossom into.
