A resort town where it’s easy to stay for a day
A road trip that can be done in less than two hours is our kind of getaway.
This weekend will be one of the last when swimming in a Wisconsin lake without a wet suit is still feasible, making it a good time to visit ?Chicago?s Martha?s Vineyard,? aka the gorgeous vacation town of Lake Geneva. And for day-trippers, the Maxwell Street Days festival (tomorrow through Sunday) is a good way to see the whole town during one leisurely sidewalk stroll.
The best selection of antiques, local art, jewelry, tableware and more is often found in the morning, so shop first, then grab an outdoor table for lunch. Popeye?s (no relation to the chicken joint) is a lakefront classic, or try tapas and Champagne on the lawn at the Baker House.
Devote your afternoon to the lake itself with a tour aboard the historic U.S. Mailboat Walworth, which misses nary a sprawling waterfront estate as it hugs the shoreline for two hours during the ?full lake? excursion (departs at 3:10 p.m.; tickets are $28).
It?s enough to put the 80-mile drive back to the city to shame.
