We?ve long admired the talent the classic American leather brand Coach has for keeping itself relevant in a fashion sea roiling with short-term fascinations and fleeting loyalties.
Like many companies before it, Coach has chosen heart-of-America Chicago as the proving ground for its new retail format. It?s a bigger, brighter day at the Coach flagship on Michigan Avenue, which reopened last week after a major overhaul.
The remodeled store clocks in at 6,385 square feet, up from its original 3,900. The ceilings are higher, engaging digital displays play out on a large LED screen and fixtures alternate between new and vintage. There?s a new women?s shoe salon and a boutique-like sunglasses and jewelry area; products for men are sectioned off in a department that feels more like someone?s manly living room.
The store bursts with color, thanks to the bold hues of Coach?s new fall Legacy collection. The line includes some of the brand?s most iconic silhouettes; we?d love to have the familiar large duffle in a vibrant new cobalt ($398) or, for preppy days, a tasseled carryall in color-blocked red and navy ($458).
