A Chicago start-up aims for a painless approach to health care
If you’ve been thinking of switching dentists or maybe trying Botox for the first time, there’s a new Chicago-based business that might give you the push you need to go for it.
At first glance, CareXtend looks like Groupon for health care. The website specializes in offers that span the wellness spectrum from chiropractic care to nutrition services, hearing and vision care, podiatry and over-the-counter medicines. (The company screens its providers for proper licensing and reputation.)
A prenatal massage for $75 (regularly $100) at Urban Oasis and Invisalign for $3,999 (regularly $5,500) at MG Dentistry and Rejuvenation Center are on the site now, and CareXtend plans to set itself apart from traditional “deal” sites by making its offers available for a much longer period of time while introducing new ones each month.
CareXtend uses printable vouchers for one-time services and also has discount programs and subscriptions for services like ongoing dental care--often with multiple providers to choose from. If you contribute to an HSA or FSA, the site clearly identifies which of its offers are eligible for deductions from those accounts.
It’s an innovative way to save while bypassing the insurance juggernaut.
