A one-stop boutique reflects its owner’s homebody style
Despite how big Logan Square has boomed in the past few years, we still hear rumors of visitors who don’t venture west of the monument.
Too bad, as they’re missing out on a gaggle of new shops and cafés that have opened on the Milwaukee corridor west of Kedzie Avenue, the latest of which is a gem of a boutique planted directly next to the restored Logan Square Theatre: Shop 1021.
Named for proprietress Ann Kienzle’s favorite Los Angeles address (where she spent her early 20s), 1021 has a little bit of everything: bespoke hostess gifts, splurge-worthy home-office accoutrements, perks for pets and a handful of baby baubles. (Kienzle also owns Play down the street, which caters to wee ones.) Not to mention, local husband-and-wife stationers Spilled Ink Press have planted themselves at a cozy library table in the corner, making it easy to find handmade cards to give alongside presents.
Whether for ourselves or someone special, we coveted an impossibly soft Sevan herringbone throw ($40), handsome silver bottle openers by Brink ($13), olive-oil soap and hand lotion by 80 Acres ($10 to $25) and Penguin’s beautifully packaged set of 100 vintage-book-cover postcards ($25).
Better pick up a teensy two-pack of colorful Moleskine notebooks ($6) to start your shopping list.
