Known mostly for its strip of browse-worthy housewares shops, the Andersonville retail scene just got a big boost from a new boutique that holds everything we see ourselves wearing this summer.
Hallie Borden, the owner of Milk Handmade, hasn't worked in retail for years (her last job was in corporate marketing), but you'd never know it from the airy, elegantly curated selection in her six-day-old shop, where everything is, yes, handmade by independent companies.
Among the pieces we'd wear on a sail or out to lunch or stow in our suitcase for a beach vacation: über-soft sleeveless tees with special details by Simone's Rose ($82), a dotted lightweight white cotton tunic from I AM ($74), funky leather-and-fabric bags and clutches from Gift Shop Brooklyn (most under $100) and wooden sunglasses (they float!) from Vision Counsel ($108).
Also tucked away in wooden cabinets and displayed on tables is an array of gift-ready items: candles, tubs of whipped moisturizer, jewelry and more.
Borden offered us cookies to go with our shopping experience, but we were so immersed in the goods, we took our Milk straight up.
