We never thought we'd say this, but we've discovered a favorite new health treat...at a diner.

The star of our visit to Eggy?s--a just-opened spot in Lakeshore East--was the peppery kale-and-quinoa salad ($9.25), with its heap of pink agrodolce onions, toasted walnuts and sliced apples.

The salad alone makes Eggy?s a must-try in the neighborhood, which is adjacent to Millennium Park but can be hard to find. (Tip: Park in the Lakeshore East garage that validates with a purchase at Mariano?s market; a bottle of wine there is a better investment than the nearest metered spots.)

With its huge windows overlooking a park and modern furniture and light fixtures, Eggy?s--owned by the group behind Custom House--still offers classics like omelets (try the Smoked Salmon, $11.50) and milkshakes ($7.50).

Our whitefish sandwich ($10.50) with crispy slaw was enormously satisfying, as was moist banana bread with chocolate chips ($6.75). Surprise: It?s also vegan and gluten-free.

Next time, we won?t pass up the coconut cake that holds court on the bar near the open kitchen. We overheard our server tell someone it?s the best dessert in the house, and it would be unprofessional if we didn?t test that claim.
