Pyar & Co.'s Lantana pillows are inspired by a favorite Miu Miu shoe (see next slide).
The rich colors and intricate details of Indian fabrics lend themselves as beautifully to interiors as they do to traditional saris--at least, that's what Chicagoan Paula Queen thought when she first visited the country in 2010, on the occasion of her wedding to a man whose extended family lives in Kanpur, India.
A year later, back in the States and with business mentorship from her new father-in-law, Queen set up her company, Pyar & Co., which makes decorative pillows inspired by saris, Indian jewelry and even a favorite pair of Miu Miu shoes. The line is sold thus far in three Chicago boutiques; future plans include curtains, table runners and upholstery projects.
Queen works with a fair-trade mill in Calcutta, where she sends her sketches and design directions to be hand-worked in luxurious silk, velvet, linen, sequins and beads. When the fabrics are delivered to Chicago, she pairs them with custom-cut down pillows from another carefully selected factory in Cincinnati.
Yes, they're mostly for looks, but we're tempted to snuggle up.
