Do-Rite Doughnuts
Valrhona chocolate-glazed doughnuts ($2.50) at Do-Rite.

When we heard a certain River North takeout window was no longer the only game in town for fried dough rings, we opted out of our usual granola one morning in order to check out the competition: the new Do-Rite Donuts & Coffee on Randolph Street. Carved out of a bit of unused space at Petterino's, this Lettuce Entertain You take on the doughnut craze proved a worthy opponent to its forerunner.

The line was about seven deep when we visited during peak weekday breakfast time, but the staff was nimble with their paper bags and sturdy cardboard boxes, quickly grabbing rings from trays of flavors as classic as the crunchy buttermilk old-fashioned ($1) and as inventive as the gooey the peanut-butter-and-jelly "Bull's-Eye" ($2.50). Clutching our glazed treasure, we were out in three minutes flat.

Back in the car, we couldn't wait: One bite into the still-warm vanilla-bean glazed ($2) and we couldn't suppress a smile at the super-fresh goodness that reminded us of the Sunday mornings of our childhood--only lighter, fluffier and several notches of decadence higher.
