When was the last time you put pen to paper--and not to sign a credit-card slip? What about your last meaningful human interaction that didn’t involve racking up “likes” on social media?
If you’re due for a little soul maintenance, head to Rooted Self Expression Center in Wicker Park, which is just the place for purging your angst.
Sign up for a workshop in painting, writing, drawing, music or acting--and for an hour and a half, a "facilitator" trained by owner Shruti Sekhri will encourage your creative side. (You need zero experience to participate.)
We recently tried the writing class, which mostly consisted of sitting on the floor in a room full of friendly strangers and venting our life’s frustrations onto a blank notepad while soothing--okay, a tad distracting--sitar music played on the speakers.
The emotional punch came at the end, when we were asked to pair up for a feel-good exercise in which we stared into a classmate’s eyes and tried to silently convey everything we’d just poured out on paper. We’re not gonna lie: We cried a little.
Classes are $20 for drop-ins; $150 for a six-week series. Rooted Self Expression Center, 2221 W. North Ave.; 773-698-8740 or rootedcenter.com
