Hop To It
A beer cafe opens in Lakeview
We have nothing against a fabulous glass of rosé, but we’ve always been proud beer lovers too. This is Chicago, after all--home to craft-beer mania, with a microbrewery on every block.
More like a laid-back coffeehouse than a bar, the spot lets you sample everything in one place with a curated selection of 12 rotating drafts and 300 bottles and cans to drink on site or buy at the retail space up front. (You’ll find lots of Midwestern brews.)
We tried the Moody Tongue Cold-Pressed Paw Paw ($5 for a 12-ounce draft), which is fruity and a little spicy. Then we whiled away the afternoon in the café, which has the feel of a European train station. There’s even a fireplace and free Wi-Fi, so you can take your next meeting over hops instead of lattes.
For dinner, we ordered pizza from neighbor Gino’s East. (Jim Noodle and Gyros on the Spit also deliver.) Otherwise, there’s a tiny selection of local snacks like Mama’s Nuts and healthy JimmyBars--but really, the focus here is on beer. Good beer.
