As long as you avoid the Highway 42 thoroughfare, you can’t go wrong with almost any running route in Door County--the area’s many parks and interior county roads are full of great views. That said, Peninsula State Park is a can’t-miss for runners. Go at dawn to hit the gorgeous 9.6-mile Sunset Trail before the crowds descend.
The Green Bay side of the peninsula has calmer conditions for an open-water swim, and this inlet off the shore of Egg Harbor features clear waters and beautiful views. Perks include restrooms and outdoor showers.
Cheese curds, frozen custard and cherry pie are standard fare in “the Door.” But with the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan on either side of the peninsula, opt for fresh seafood instead. Get a great core and upper-body workout by rowing a rented kayak. Head out from beautiful Eagle Harbor toward Horseshoe Island, with the towering cliffs of Peninsula State Park on your left. Wrap around the park?s jut and you?ll come upon Nicolet Bay, one of the most popular beaches on the peninsula. Best of all, when you land at Ephraim at the end of your paddle, you can toast your hard work with a frosty root-beer float at the classic ice-cream shop Wilson?s.
Want to escape the crowds? With 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline among its nearly 2,400 acres, this Northern Door gem is on what’s known as the peninsula’s “quiet side.” Grab a park map and immerse yourself in 30 miles of meandering trails.

For a serene ride, hit the county roads. This winding stretch (also known as Bay Shore Drive) runs about 40 miles for a round trip between Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay. The route hugs the shoreline of Green Bay and offers cyclists a generous shoulder, minimal elevation change, sparse traffic and pleasant peeks at the water along the way.

We’ve been working hard to shape up this summer, and just because we’re getting away for a weekend doesn’t mean we’re going to lose focus. (Seriously. We mean it.)
That’s why we’re taking a trip to Door County, a collection of charming waterfront communities nestled on a thin strip of land between Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Lake Michigan.
Less than three hours from downtown Chicago, Door County has more to offer than wine tastings and cherry pie. One of the best ways to experience the spot is as a fitness destination--a place to get out onto the water, trails and county roads. See our slideshow for tips on how to use this natural paradise as your own personal trainer.
