Squareletto
Behold the "squareletto": part square, part stiletto.

Every so often it happens: You get the urge to totally change your look. But if a new wardrobe or drastic dye job isn’t in the cards, the easiest way to have a little fun is with a wild manicure.

There’s no time like summer to experiment, so we asked five of our favorite Chicago salons what trends their clients are requesting--and how we can get the coolest nails in town.

The “squareletto” Ask your nail tech for this new shape and your nails will be a cross between squared off and stiletto-pointy. Think Adele’s spikes, but filed flatter at the tip so they’re not so talon-like. $15 at Glowout, 160 N. Halsted St.; 312-605-0905 or glowoutsalon.com

Metallic with a pattern Pick a gleaming, full-coverage bronze or silver polish, then decorate with polka dots or stripes for added flair. $18 at Acchaa Beauty + Wellness Spa, 500 N. Wells St.; 312-321-0011 or acchaa.com

Neon chevron Many clients choose a nude base color (another trend!) and ask for neon zigzags for a look that’s neutral but out-there all at once. From $15 at Nas Salon & Spa, 3757 N. Racine Ave.; 773-248-6483 or nassalonandspa.com

No-chip gels with glitter Commit to weeks of bright blue or purple by getting a no-chip mani, then make it twinkle in the sun with a splash of glitter.
From $26 at Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas, 15 locations around the city

Short, square and colorful When your nails are trimmed short and neatly squared, they make a perfect canvas for bold hues like coral, electric pink or blue. $50 at The Spa at Trump, 401 N. Wabash Ave.; 312-588-8000 or trumphotelcollection.com
