Thrill-seeking for wusses at iFly
We went skydiving once. We were younger, stupider and, let’s face it, succumbing to peer pressure.
These days, we value our time on this earth too much to voluntarily plummet toward it. Luckily, there’s a safer way to get that floating-in-air thrill.
At iFLY, an indoor skydiving facility that recently opened in Rosemont (a Naperville outpost is coming soon), you’ll soar in a wind tunnel that feels like you've jumped out of a plane but without actually...jumping out of a plane ($70 for two one-minute flights).
As with real skydiving, you’ll take a short safety course before your “flight" to learn a few hand signals and correct posture. Then you’ll get suited up in a flight suit, goggles, earplugs and a helmet. See? Totally safe.
So what does it feel like? Well, you’ll think you’re walking toward the world’s largest vacuum cleaner--the tunnel has fans powerful enough to lift you off the ground. Lean in with your hips, extend your arms like Superman and take off on a cushion of air.
Stopping is the tricky part: Grab the doorframe and swing your knees toward your chest to jump out. You’ll do great. But if you choke, hey, you’re only a few feet off the ground.
