Lightly Breaded

Two bakeries that cater to health nuts

image description

We want to eat right, but we can’t imagine living a completely breadless life. Thankfully, two Lakeview spots are offering healthier takes on bread and pastries--even for the vegan or gluten-free eater.

Fritz Pastry The bread subscription service at this gem of a bakery gets you one fresh loaf of bread (most are vegan) every Tuesday ($25 per month). While pickup is typically in-store, Fritz will send your loaves to Wormhole Coffee if Wicker Park is closer to home. Look for classics like challah and sourdough, as well as baker Jaime Podgorny’s herbivore-geared creations: Think sage loaf made with vegan stock and vegan molasses whole wheat. Podgorny is also a vegan sweets whiz--don’t pass up her fluffy, creamy coffee-whiskey macaroons. 1408 W. Diversey Pkwy.; 773-857-2989 or fritzpastry.com

Senza Since it opened last fall, this restaurant has gained a following among the adventurous gluten-free set. It's also just launched a weekday gluten-free bakery, offering up breads (including vegan), English muffins, biscuits, vegan dark-chocolate doughnuts and, our favorite--the supercrisp “pecan clouds” (very light, thin cookies with an intense pecan flavor). Stop by Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, or on Sunday for the three-course prix-fixe brunch ($24). 2873 N. Broadway; 773-770-3527 or senzachicago.com
