The New #2 Movie on Netflix Is Star-Studded & Comes from ‘West Wing’ Creator Aaron Sorkin

Step aside, Moneyball, because a brand-new film just claimed a highly coveted spot.

Introducing The Trial of the Chicago 7. Although it just premiered on Netflix a few days ago, it’s already climbed to number two on the streaming service’s list of most watched movies. (Although Hubie Halloween is number one, it’s currently ahead of A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting, In a Valley of Violence and American Murder: The Family Next Door.)

So, what’s the hype all about? The film is based on the aftermath of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, where a peaceful protest suddenly went awry. It tells the story of the seven defendants who were charged by the federal government with several counts of conspiracy.

While the trial was widely covered by the media, the movie is supposed to offer a never-before-seen glimpse at what went on in the courtroom. *Grabs popcorn*

The Trial of the Chicago 7 features an all-star cast, including Eddie Redmayne (Tom Hayden), Alex Sharp (Rennie Davis), Sacha Baron Cohen (Abbie Hoffman), Jeremy Strong (Jerry Rubin), John Carroll Lynch (David Dellinger), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Bobby Seale), Mark Rylance (William Kunstler) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Richard Schultz).

The movie was directed by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network), who also wrote the screenplay. Marc E. Platt (La La Land), Stuart M. Besser (Molly’s Game), Tyler Thompson (Hacksaw Ridge) and Matt Jackson (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) served as executive producers.

This sounds right up our alley.
