This Must-Watch Tracee Ellis Ross Flick Just Hit HBO Max—& She’s Giving Us Total Diana Ross Vibes

What do you get when you combine Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson? This must-watch flick, that’s what.

HBO Max just added The High Note to its massive database. Although the movie originally premiered back in May 2020, this is the first time it’s been available on the streaming service.

The High Note offers a realistic glimpse into the Los Angeles music scene. The story follows Grace Davis (Ross), a high-maintenance pop star who is letting her fame go to her head. Her poor assistant, Maggie (Johnson), takes the majority of her wrath, running errands and fetching coffee, even though she dreams of becoming a music producer.

When Grace is presented with a career-altering opportunity, she comes up with an alternative plan that could change, well, everything. Oh, and did we mention Ross sings in the movie? We have no doubt that Diana Ross is one proud mama.

In addition to Ross and Johnson, the movie also stars Kelvin Harrison Jr. (David), Bill Pullman (Max), Zoë Chao (Kate), June Diane Raphael (Gail), Eugene Cordero (Seth), Ice Cube (Jack) and Neil Lane (as himself).

The High Note was directed by Nisha Ganatra (Late Night). Flora Greeson (Queen for a Day) wrote the screenplay, while Tim Bevan (Hanna) and Eric Fellner (Les Misérables) served as executive producers.

The High Note is now streaming on HBO Max. If you need us, we’ll be warming up our vocal cords.
