Netflix’s New Top 10 Series Examines the Real Stories Behind Your Fave Pop Stars

If you’ve ever listened to a song and thought, I wonder what inspired these lyrics, you’ve come to the right place.

Netflix’s new eight-part documentary, This Is Pop, recently premiered on the streaming service, and it’s designed to answer all your burning questions about the music industry. The show is so popular, it previously claimed the number ten spot on Netflix’s list of top-rated series. (It was ranked behind must-watch titles like Manifest, Too Hot to Handle, Sweet Tooth, The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals and Black Summer.)

The official synopsis reads, “The biggest names in music tell untold stories of pivotal moments in pop music history.” But it’s so much more than that.

The docuseries does a deep dive into the industry and examines everything from the real stories behind classic songs to the impact music festivals have on up-and-coming artists. It also takes a walk down memory lane, analyzing the rise in popularity of Auto-Tune, boy bands and subgenres.

“Every time I hear the word ‘Brit pop,’ a little part of me dies,” someone says in the clip.

The episodes will “delve deep into various different aspects of popular music from country to hip-hop and will include interviews and snippets from some of the world’s biggest music artists.”

This Is Pop features special appearances by several familiar faces, including Shania Twain, T-Pain, Jack Casady, Hozier, Andy Kim, Neil Sedaka, Michelle Phillips, Simon Price, Bill Stephney, Donita Sparks and Arlo Guthrie.
