Viola Davis Is a Fierce Warrior in Trailer for New Movie ‘The Woman King’

With a Triple Crown of Acting under her belt (meaning she's earned an Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award), Viola Davis is inarguably a powerhouse in the world of Hollywood. And now, it looks like the Ma Rainey's Black Bottom actress is ready to wow us yet again, with her latest role in the upcoming historical epic The Woman King.

Davis is taking on a totally new part, as she plays a member of the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military regime that existed up until the early 1900s. In the film, Davis portrays their leader, Nanisca, and based on the trailer that was just dropped, we can't wait to see the 56-year-old star in this movie. Check it out below.

“An evil is coming that threatens our kingdom, our freedom,” a voice says at the beginning of the clip. “But we have a weapon.”

This is when we see Davis's character rise to the challenge, as European imperialists attempt to take over the Dahomey land. “The Europeans wish to conquer us. They will not stop until the whole of Africa is theirs,” Davis says in the role of Nanisca. “We must fight back, for our people...Some things are worth fighting for.”

In addition to Davis, The Woman King features a number of other notable stars, including Thuso Mbedu, who starred in Amazon Prime's The Underground Railroad last year, as well as Lashana Lynch, who played Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel and Nomi in No Time to Die. Other cast members include Sheila Atim, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, Jayme Lawson, Masali Baduza, Angélique Kidjo and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

The Woman King hits theaters on September 16.
