10 Trends That Will Be Huge This Summer
Bring on the rosé slushies and eyelash lifts
Ever wonder what that next big thing will be? Flying cars? Self-hemming jeans? Phones that never need to charge? OK, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves. But you get the point, which is why we've compiled a few fads that you should definitely keep on your radar this summer.
1. Off-the-Shoulder Tops
Shoulders have been way in recently (credit: Michelle Obama). And, this season, sleeves are dipping down to about tricep level in order to show those puppies off. Be prepared to sport the brunch-ready staple with your favorite denim skirt or breezy culottes.
2. Rosé Cocktails
Move over, red-wine sangria. Make way for cocktails made from crisper, drier summer rosé, which will be popping up at chic bars all around the country as temps start to rise. (We’re particularly fond of rosé slushies, in case you were wondering.)
3. Digital-Detox Vacations
Long gone are the days when you needed to document every single second of your vacation. This year, we’re seeing more women depart for remote destinations that literally force you to unplug. Think: an island getaway to St. Vincent and the Grenadines that asks you to hand over all devices.
4. Skipping the Conditioner
Hear us out: It could actually change your hair for the better. We’re talking shinier, lighter and less greasy. And less money on hair products means more money for that trip to Spain, right?
5. Jane Austen
Sure, she’s been dead for 200 years. But the beloved author (and essential creator of the modern romantic comedy) is having a serious resurgence thanks to two new modern-day retellings of Pride and Prejudice (Eligible and The Girl from Summer Hill) and a Kate Beckinsale-helmed film adaptation of the novella Lady Susan.
6. Eyelash Lifts
No, not eyelash extensions. Eyelash lifts are a new treatment in which a semi-permanent curling serum is applied to give the appearance of fuller, thicker lashes for up to 12 weeks. It’s going mainstream, so get yours before Cindy from book club beats you to it.
7. Smarter Workouts
Too hot to run outdoors? Sign up for a data-driven workout class that monitors heart rate and tracks progress via apps. Studios like OrangeTheory and Fit36 have already taken off, so it won’t belong before your local gym starts blasting your calories-burned stat to the entire Zumba class.
8. Bonkers Milkshakes
These Instagram-worthy beauties are here to stay thanks to an explosion of restuarants and world-famous chefs crafting up their own gorgeous varieties. Don’t be surprised if your social-media feed is filled with drool-worthy frappes all summer long. (And you definitely owe it to yourself to try at least one before September hits.)
9. Tasseled Accessories
If 2015 was the year of lace-ups, 2016 is undoubtedly the year of swinging fringe. We’re loving it on purses, shoes, scarves and skirts.
We were hesitant, too. But as it turns out, it’s a helluva lot of fun once you get the hang of it. Here are a few accounts to follow to help get you started. (Just don’t expect to partake while on your digital detox.)
