Allow Us to Introduce Steven Spielberg’s Wife, Kate Capshaw

Steven Spielberg is easily one of the best directors in Hollywood. Aside from having three Academy Awards and 12 Emmys under his belt, the 76-year-old icon has delivered several unforgettable blockbusters throughout his career, including Saving Private Ryan, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws and Jurassic Park. And recently, the director has been making headlines with his Oscar-nominated drama film, The Fabelmans.

But as much as we enjoy keeping up with his professional success, we’re equally interested in his romantic life. For example, who is Steven Spielberg’s wife? And when did they get married? Keep reading for answers.

1. Who Is Steven Spielberg’s Wife?

Spielberg is married to Kate Capshaw, a former actress who's best known for her work in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Black Rain, Just Cause and Dreamscape. Before launching her acting career, the Texas native worked as a special education teacher in Missouri. In 1995, she told The Spokesman-Review, "I think my interest in special education was prompted by some instinctual knowledge that we were all very different, that we all had special needs."

While chatting with Entertainment Tonight, she revealed that she lost interest in the field. "I didn't like teaching so much. I liked the kids, but I didn't like teaching,” she said. “The truth was that it wasn't stimulating.”

In the early '80s, Capshaw moved to New York to pursue acting full-time and appeared in quite a few films and TV shows. But in 2001, she retired from acting after her final project, Due East.

2. How Did They Meet?

The happy couple first met on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Capshaw and Spielberg became close after working on the film and moved in together in 1989.

When speaking about her experience on the set, she told PM Magazine that the cast and crew didn’t seem to mind her lack of acting experience. She said, "One thing that was really lovely is that nobody made me feel bad for being afraid. They didn't go, 'Oh gosh, she's being a girl.' In these movies, the girl always gets the worst stuff. An action-adventure movie is always difficult by nature because there's a sense of urgency."

Together, Spielberg and Capshaw have five children, including Sasha, Sawyer and Destry. The pair also adopted two children: Theo and Mikaela.

Capshaw has a daughter named Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy) from a previous relationship. Spielberg also shares a 37-year-old son, Max, with his ex-wife, Amy Irving.

5. Have They Been Married Before?

Both Capshaw and Spielberg were married before they met each other. Capshaw exchanged vows with principal Robert Capshaw in 1976. They welcomed their daughter, Jessica, in that same year but divorced in 1980. Meanwhile, Spielberg tied the knot with actress and singer Amy Irving in 1985, but they divorced four years later.
