Will There Be a ‘Squid Game’ Season Three? Director Hints at the Possibility

Let the games begin…once again!

The popular South Korean survival series Squid Game is officially returning for a second season. Per Variety, the Netflix Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, confirmed that another season will be coming to the streaming platform.

When asked if there is a second season, he said, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.” Before Sarandos confirmed the news, the Squid Game creator himself, Hwang Dong-hyuk, shared his plans for a possible season two.

In an exclusive interview with the Associated Press, the director revealed that the show’s central character, Seong Gi-hun (played by actor Lee Jung-jae), will return for more adventures.

“I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world,” Hwang said at the time.

Now that Squid Game season 2 has been greenlit, will there be a third season as well? While there hasn’t been an official announcement, Hwang is definitely thinking ahead.

During an interview with the Korean Times, the director shared that he already has plans for a third season. “I’m in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3. We will come to a conclusion any time soon,” he explained.

Squid Game follows a group of players, who are in deep financial debt, competing for a grand prize of 45.6 billion won. The contestants must play childlike games for the prize money. But there is only one catch – if you lose, you die.

The South Korean drama became a worldwide phenomenon, surpassing Bridgerton as the streaming service’s biggest show ever. Given the show’s immense popularity, it’s a no-brainer that a second season would be in the works (and perhaps a third season).

Keeping our fingers crossed for a season three announcement soon.
