The story line is similar to Thelma & Louise in that it follows two best friends— Rei (Kiko Mizuhara) and Nanae (Honami Sato)—as they embark on the road trip of a lifetime. The only difference is that (unlike T & L) Rei and Nanae aren’t just friends. They’re lovers, and they’re on the run from the police after murdering Nanae’s abusive ex-husband.
Ride or Die was directed by Ryuichi Hiroki (It’s Only Talk). Although it’s inspired by the comic series by Nakamura, the screenplay was written by Nami Sakkawa.
Based on the gripping trailer, we wouldn’t be surprised if the flick resonates so much with viewers that it ends up on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. If it does, it will be ranked among the likes of Bad Trip, Secret Magic Control Agency, Seaspiracy, A Week Away, Yes Day and Elizabeth & Margaret: Love and Loyalty.
Ride or Die will hit Netflix on Thursday, April 15. In the meantime, we’ll be re-watching Thelma & Louise.
