If you watched Little Fires Everywhere, odds are you were hypnotized by Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington's beautiful hair and skin (and their stellar performances too, obvi). Well, it turns out their biggest beauty secret just might be this green smoothie.
Reese broke it down for us on Instagram, saying that she’s been drinking this smoothie for breakfast every day for about eight or nine years. “I have this instead of breakfast, I have it around 10 or 11 o’clock in the morning and I’m not hungry at all until 1 o’clock,” she said before loading up the Vitamix.
Her obsession began after she was seated next to none other than Kerry Washington at an awards show years ago. “I didn’t really know her, but I was like, ‘your skin is so beautiful, what do you do?’ And she said, ‘actually, I think it’s from this drink that I drink, it’s just really changed my skin and it makes my hair and nails really strong.’”
The smoothie’s effectiveness might have something to do with all those leafy greens, which are hydrating and rich in hair- and skin-boosting vitamins and minerals. Here’s how to make two servings; just store the second half for tomorrow morning. Oh, and Reese’s secret ingredient is dancing, but we’ll let it slide if you decide it’s too early for that.
- 2 heads romaine lettuce, chopped
- ½ cup spinach
- 1 pear
- 1 apple
- 1 banana
- 1 lemon, rind removed (leave the seeds in—mmm, fiber)
- ½ cup coconut water
- Additional greens or veggies (optional; Reese adds celery)
- Additional protein (optional; protein powder, flax seeds, almond butter, etc.)
Step One: Combine all the ingredients in a blender and pulse.
Step Two: Push the greens down if they get stuck. Once it’s smooth, it’s ready to drink.
