This True-Crime Doc on Netflix Will Have You Guessing Until the Very End

First, there was Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. Then there was Why Did You Kill Me? And now, Netflix has blessed us with another must-watch documentary.

Introducing Murder by the Coast, which tells the tragic true-crime story of 19-year-old Rocío Wanninkhof. Although it just premiered on the streaming service a few days ago, it was included on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It was ranked at number nine behind popular titles like Ice Road, Fatherhood, Good on Paper, The Seventh Day and The Mitchells vs. the Machines.)

Murder by the Coast introduces viewers to Wanninkhof, who was tragically killed in Spain in 1999. After the Civil Guard was assigned to the case, they immediately named the prime suspect as Dolores “Loli” Vázquez (the former partner of Wanninkhof’s mom, Alicia Hornos).

There wasn’t any evidence that tied Vázquez to the murder scene—however, that didn’t stop the media from insinuating she was the one responsible.

Everything changed a few years later when new findings emerged that connected the case to another killing. (Minor spoiler alert: The case is now solved, making it a full-circle story.)

The official synopsis reads, “In 1999, teen Rocío Wanninkhof is murdered. Her mother’s ex-partner, Dolores Vázquez, is suspected. Did she do it? A second victim reveals the truth.”

Murder by the Coast was directed by Tània Balló (200 km.), who also wrote the screenplay. Raimon Masllorens (Without You), Arlette Peyret (This Is Football) and Carol Saliner (Nit de nits) served as producers.
