If there’s one thing we’ve learned so far in 2021, it’s that TV shows and movies can quickly make their way onto Netflix’s most popular list, and once some of these programs make the cut, they can stay in the top 10 for weeks at a time. And we have a feeling a certain telenovela is the next to do just that.
Called Mariposa de Barrio, the 2017 television show is currently ranked at #8 (it actually jumped up a spot from last week) on the streaming service’s most-watched list, ranking behind Cobrai Kai, Bridgerton and Cocomelon.
In short, this telenova tells the life story of Jenni Rivera (Angélica Celaya), an American singer-songwriter who tragically passed away in 2012. The story is based on her autobiography Unbreakable: My Story, My Way, which was published posthumously in 2013.
Keep reading for everything we know.
Mariposa de Barrio’s official synopsis reads: “The inspiring and heartbreaking story of Jenni Rivera, known as La Diva de La Banda, the top best-selling female figure in the male-dominated Regional Mexican genre. Jenni’s adult life is marked by her tumultuous relationship with Tino, her long-term boyfriend and then-husband who mistreated her and her children. True to her family values, Jenni sticks to her husband until the situation becomes unbearable. Later on, Jenni will have other stormy love affairs, but only one real passion: music.”
In addition to Celaya, the series also stars Gabriel Porras, Rosalinda Rodríguez, Uriel del Toro, Stephanie Arcila, Adrian Carvajal and Emmanuel Morales.
Oh, and while it’s only one season, it includes 91 episodes (!) which makes it ideal for bingeing. Better get to it.
