Ever since House of the Dragon aired its season finale, we’ve been asking ourselves the same question: When will the Game of Thrones prequel return for season 2? Well, keep scrolling for details.
Everything We Know About HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 (Including New Cast Members)
1. Is House of the Dragon Returning For Season 2?
Yes, House of the Dragon is returning for season 2, but HBO hasn’t announced a premiere date. The renewal news shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to GoT fans. (FYI, House of the Dragon broke the record for the largest audience of a premiere in HBO history.) In a statement, Francesca Orsi (executive vice president of HBO programming) revealed that renewing House of the Dragon for season 2 was a no-brainer.
“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” she said. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.”
2. When Will House of the Dragon Season 2 Premiere?
Unfortunately, HBO Max hasn’t revealed a premiere date for House of the Dragon season 2. But in April 2023, the network announced that production has begun on the show’s second season. The new episodes will be filmed at Leavesden Studios in the U.K.
“House of the Dragon has returned. We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera,” said series co-creator Ryan Condal. “All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies and riding their dragons into battle. We can't wait to share what we have in store.”
3. What Is House of the Dragon About?
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book, titled Fire & Blood, and takes place 200 years before the events in Game of Thrones. In his spoiler-free review, Phil Mutz (PureWow’s vice president of entertainment and news) explains that it’s much more fast-paced than GoT. “So many things happen over the course of an hour that Game of Thrones likely would have spread over multiple episodes,” he wrote. “The reason for this is there is a more focused story to tell (though it’s no less grand).”
4. Who Stars In House of the Dragon?
The season one cast includes Paddy Considine (Viserys Targaryen), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria) and Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower).
5. Are There New Cast Members?
Deadline recently confirmed that House of the Dragon is adding four new cast members: Simon Russell Beale (Simon Strong), Freddie Fox (Gwayne Hightower), Gayle Rankin (Alys Rivers) and Abubakar Salim (Alyn of Hull). While little is known about their involvement, the newcomers are all connected to the story line through various season one characters.
