Bowen Yang and Joel Kim Booster Are Headed to ‘Fire Island’ in New Hulu Romantic Comedy

For many members of the LGBTQ+ community, Fire Island (in Long Island, NY) is one of the hottest destinations for summer, with its lush, beachside location and rich queer history. And now, the iconic location will be the backdrop for one of the summer's most highly-anticipated films, Fire Island.

Led by SNL's Bowen Yang and Sunnyside's Joel Kim Booster, this upcoming Hulu romantic comedy will be a reimagining of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, as it follows a group of queer men who travel to the titular destination, where plenty of romantic encounters and comical misunderstandings will ensue.

And now, Hulu has dropped the first trailer for Fire Island, which will be available to stream on June 3. Check it out below.

Besides Yang and Booster, Fire Island will include other major names like Margaret Cho, Zane Phillips, James Scully, Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora and more. The script was penned by Booster, and the film was directed by Andrew Ahn.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the idea for the film actually originated from a trip to Fire Island, where Booster was reading Austen's famous novel and kept telling his friends he was going to make a “gay Pride and Prejudice.” However, soon Booster's joke became a reality.

Now, the film will be a landmark release in a year where LGBTQ+ creators are taking over the rom com genre, with Billy Eichner set to release his movie Bros later this summer, and Hulu releasing the film Crush on April 29. In Hulu's description for Fire Island, they say the film is, “An unapologetic, modern day rom-com showcasing a diverse, multicultural examination of queerness and romance.”

June 3 can't come soon enough.
