Will There Be an ‘Encanto 2’? Here’s What We Know

There's no denying that Encanto has become a runaway success. The latest animated film from Disney holds a 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has earned over $200 million at the box office.

So, while kids (and parents) are spending all their free time singing the movie's catchy songs—like “We Don't Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure”—the question now on everyone's mind is: Will there be an Encanto 2?

Of course, it has only been a few months since Encanto's release, so it will likely be a while before we see the Madrigal family again. However, the odds of a sequel are looking good, given the popularity of the first film.

As TechRadar pointed out, the movie recently overtook a record previously held by Frozen, when the song “We Don't Talk About Bruno” reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing “Let It Go” to become the highest-charting Disney song in 26 years.

Since Encanto is achieving similar success to previous hits like Frozen, it seems almost certain that there will be a sequel in the future. However, it's important to note that it took six years for Frozen II to be released. Meanwhile, other popular animated films have seen even greater delays between sequels, like the 14-year gap between The Incredibles and Incredibles 2.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, Jared Bush—who wrote and directed the film—has already expressed interest in expanding the Encanto universe.

During an interview with The Digital Fix, Bush revealed that he would be interested in an Encanto television series on Disney+. He said, “I think it is the right thing to do, you know. I think we should all start writing our letters to Disney now and saying that’s important. You know, I think one of the really exciting things honestly about Disney+ is that there is a lot of stories to tell through Disney+.”

Bush added, “I think with this movie especially we fell in love with every single character, and I think that we try to design them in a way that you want to know more about them...So I would very, very happily see a show about any member of that family.”

Charise Castro Smith, who helped co-write the film, also said, “I can tell you that Lin-Manuel Miranda really wants a show about Dolores [the family member who has super hearing, voiced by Adassa].”

We'll be keeping our fingers crossed.
