7 Dating Don’ts We Learned from ‘The Bachelorette’ Premiere (& One Thing We Actually Might Try)

It’s one thing to Google your date’s name, but it’s a completely different story when someone compiles a guide on how to be a likeable contestant…and then brings the notes on the show. Big yikes.

In short, go big or go home. That way, you’ll know you tried your best, even if it doesn’t work out. Besides, no one wants to be that person who shows up in a toy firetruck right before someone arrives in the real deal.

When someone says, “Break a leg,” please don’t take it seriously. (No offense, Garrett.)

In the modern-day dating scene, it’s important to stand out by making a memorable first impression. Whether you flaunt your personal style or lead with a cheesy pickup line, the meet-cute determines the rest of the relationship, so use it wisely.

When Young meets Joe, she immediately recognizes him as the man who ghosted her on social media. As in, he completely cut off all communication with no explanation. Despite the instant attraction, their relationship is destined to fail simply because Young doesn’t trust him (and she probably never will).

Although Joe is in hot water, at least he was honest about why he did it. Communication is key, even if you’re not ready for it. If something is too sensitive to talk about on the first date, then say so.

Just don’t do it.

Based on the premiere, it’s clear that Young isn’t one to avoid confrontation. After Joe’s arrival, she sits down with him and candidly asks for an explanation. Although Joe reveals that he wasn’t ready for a relationship at that time, Young doesn’t tiptoe around the situation. She thanks him for coming and then encourages him to step it up if he wants to regain her trust.

This behavior is different from past Bachelorettes, who typically smile, nod and excuse themselves before revealing their true feelings to the producers. That’s not the case with Young, and it’s extremely refreshing.

The Bachelorette airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
