Ana de Armas Is Unrecognizable as Marilyn Monroe in New ‘Blonde’ Trailer

If you know Ana de Armas from her leading roles in Knives Out and Deep Water, you should know the 34-year-old star has completely transformed for her latest part. In a major metamorphosis, de Armas will portray none other than Marilyn Monroe in an upcoming Netflix drama titled Blonde, adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name. While the film isn't coming out until the fall, Netflix just gifted us with an official trailer (after a teaser last month).

At first glance, we see that de Armas has traded in her brown locks for the signature bleach-blonde bob that Monroe rocked throughout her career. De Armas has the same beauty mark that was on Monroe's cheek. She's also wearing several of the blonde bombshell's famous outfits, including *that* white dress from The Seven Year Itch. Netflix's synopsis for the flick reads, “Blonde boldly reimagines the complicated life of icon Marilyn Monroe. Blurring the lines of fact and fiction, the film artfully explores the tension between her public and private life.”

At the beginning of the clip, someone knocks on her dressing room door as Monroe admires herself in the mirror and blows herself a kiss right before adoring fans scream out her name.

Soon after, Joe DiMaggio (played by Bobby Cannavale) asks her, "How did you get your start?" We watch her life play out in front of the cameras, on stage and behind the scenes. She responds with a powerful speech: "I've played Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe. I can't face doing another scene with Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn doesn't exist. When I come out of my dressing room, I'm Norma Jean."

By the end of the clip, as scenes of distressing moments in her life play, she says: "Marilyn Monroe only exists on the screen."

The Oates book on which Blonde is based was released in 2000 as a historical novel, not a biography. Still, it was so successful that it became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Oates herself said she thought it would be one of the books for which she would be remembered.

The film was directed and written by Andrew Dominik (Mindhunter), and it was given a rating of NC-17 for graphic sexual content. Alongside de Armas and Cannavale, the film will star Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Caspar Phillipson and more.

Blonde hits Netflix on September 23. We will be anxiously awaiting its release (and reading Oates's book in the meantime).
