How to Get Cheap Tickets to Every Show on Broadway
$10 “Hamilton” tickets, right this way
So you want to see a Broadway show. Maybe Hamilton or Fun Home or the one about that curious dog or whatever. There’s only one problem: You spent way too much on shoes this month to justify paying $250 a ticket.
No prob--here’s how to get cheap seats (think $10 to $40 each) for every show on Broadway.
A few hours before the show, stop by the theater and drop a slip of paper with your name in a bucket. If your name is drawn, you’ll score cheap, cash-only tickets to the show. The time of the drawing and the cost of the ticket vary by production and performance, but prices typically range from $30 to $40.
Shows that offer it: Aladdin, The Book of Mormon, Chicago and Wicked.
No time to hustle to Midtown? Enter a digital lottery instead--you’ll be notified by email if your name is drawn. If you win, you must bring photo ID to the theater and pick up your tickets in person (but hey, $10 Hamilton tickets are worth leaving work a little early).
Shows that offer it: Hamilton, An American in Paris, Beautiful, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Fun Home, Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, Les Misérables, The Lion King, Matilda, On Your Feet!, The Phantom of the Opera, School of Rock, Something Rotten! and Wicked.
Day-of-show tickets are available to buy in person at the theater, and they’re usually dirt cheap--think $25 to $40 a pop. But fair warning: rush tickets for popular shows sell out almost immediately, so plan to show up before the box office opens and wait in line.
Shows that offer it: An American in Paris, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Blackbird, Chicago, The Color Purple, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Disaster!, Fiddler on the Roof, Finding Neverland, The Humans, Les Misérables; Matilda, School of Rock, She Loves Me and Shuffle Along.
It’s exactly like general rush, but in order to buy a ticket, you have to have a valid and current student ID (so sorry, there’s no need to dig out your bent-up 2003 ID from Pepperdine).
Shows that offer it: Eclipsed, Jersey Boys, The King and I and She Loves Me.
Before you buy full-priced tickets, always check BroadwayBox and the TodayTix app to see if there are any current deals or discount codes. Even discounts for popular shows like the 2015 Tony-winning musical Fun Home are sometimes featured. (But no, not Hamilton. Nice try.)
Shows that offer it: Varies day to day.
STANDING ROOM ONLY
Typically, these tickets are only offered when the show is sold out. And yes, you have to stand in the back of the theater the entire time--but getting to dance along to School of Rock? Totally worth it.
Shows that offer it: The Book of Mormon, Chicago, The Color Purple, Fun Home, Kinky Boots, Matilda, The Phantom of the Opera and School of Rock.
