Boxing gyms are popping up all over the city, from the model favorite Gotham Gym to the newcomer Shadowbox. We recently got into the ring at Church Street Boxing Gym, where the vibe is more Million Dollar Baby than SoulCycle (in the most wonderful way possible).
After a bare-bones but heart-pumping warm-up (running stairs, squats, push-ups and the like), the gloves went on.
Our instructor demonstrated a few punch combinations and showered each of the five people with personal attention. The workout was tough. We could hardly lift our lattes for days, but it was--wait for it--really fun.
We’re not ones for unnecessary aggression, but there’s something transformative about punching a bag as hard as possible for 50 minutes.
