Chicago winters are known for sucking all the moisture out of the air (not to mention all the fun out of wearing skirts). If your skin gets as tight, itchy, raw and red as ours, then take note. We got the low-down from Yen Reis, the founder of laser facial clinic Skin Laundry and its complexion-saving skin-care line, on how to keep skin soft and glowing all winter long.
MASK ON THE REGULAR
Remember that time you tried a sheet mask at your bestie’s bachelorette? Your skin doesn’t. Reis says frequency is what matters with a masking. If a weekly hydration mask isn’t realistic given your schedule or budget, that’s OK. Start somewhere—even biweekly or monthly helps.

SWITCH UP YOUR CLEANSER
Is your normal face wash leaving your face feeling tight or parched post-wash? “Try a gentle cream- or oil-based cleanser,” says Reis. You can also skip washing in the morning if your skin isn’t particularly oily or shiny when you wake up. Yay, 30 more seconds of sleep.
TONE, TONE, TONE
Now, let’s be clear, we’re not talking about the stringent, alcohol-heavy toner you used in your teens. Toner has grown up. “Everyone should be using one,” says Reis. “They help cleanse, exfoliate, balance pH and prep your skin to absorb your serum and moisturizer.”
BE SMART ABOUT ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
We love the resurfacing effects of retinoids—but when overused, skin can veer toward tight and itchy. You may need to step down your frequency with intense active ingredients. Or try a formula that offsets the heavy-duty stuff with moisturizing ingredients, like safflower seed oil and shea butter.
