You know how when you’re sick with a cold or you’re feeling unwell you realize just how much you took for granted the little, everyday things (i.e., an unstuffed nose or a not sore throat)? I felt this way about my skin, which, aside from sporadic bouts of acne in my teens and 20s, stayed relatively clear for most of my life.

Then, I got eczema. Seemingly overnight, I had red, raised patches all over my forehead, my eyelids, my cheeks and down the side of my neck. Everything itched constantly. As a result, I had to make a few big changes, which included rehauling my entire beauty regimen.

Anything with fragrance or potential triggers had to go. In their place, I subbed in the mildest (and quite frankly, the blandest) products. My routine had become extremely unexciting with one exception: Tower28’s Sunny Days Tinted Sunscreen Foundation.

It is indeed a “tinted sunscreen foundation” as it’s labeled—and a superb one at that. With a zinc oxide SPF30 that protects against UVA and UVB rays and a buildable coverage that evens out any redness that often comes with eczema flareups (or breakouts), Sunny Days is the first complexion makeup product to receive the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

The formula has a thin, liquid texture that spreads easily onto your skin using just your fingertips, but for fuller coverage, you can use a damp makeup sponge to tap it on in layers.

I’d describe the finish as more satin than dewy, but it’s definitely not flat the way most matte foundations can be. When I spoke to Kirin Bhatty, a celebrity makeup artist who helped develop the formula, she said this was intentional. She wanted to give people the option to add shine wherever they wanted (cheekbones, temples), as opposed to blanketing their entire faces in it (which doesn’t tend to photograph well or work for everyone’s skin).

I’ve been using Sunny Days almost daily for over a month now, and I am happy to report that it has not once aggravated my eczema. I get the UV protection I need, plus a subtle veil of color that evens out my complexion. And I really enjoy using it.

In a sea of plain white tubs and creams, this cheery lavender tube gives me a taste of the fun I used to have with beauty products before eczema. It’s easy to apply, it looks good on my skin and is the rare product that does exactly what it says, which is why I plan on using it even when I’m not in the middle of another flareup.
