Growing up in a Dominican family in New York City, Priscilla wasn’t taught to love what she looked like naturally. If your hair wasn’t straight and silky, she learned, it was considered bad hair, or pelo malo. In 2013, after years of heat damage, she started researching and became obsessed with natural hair. After realizing how liberating it was to leave her hair alone, she set out to inspire all women to follow her lead through Shinestruck, a lifestyle blog that primarily focuses on inspiring confidence and encouraging women to embrace their locks.
On how she got her start in blogging. “I came across blogging by accident back in 2013. I didn’t even know that Instagram was a feed with followers at the time. I literally thought it was an editing app, until I realized people were liking my pictures. I would post pictures highlighting my hair, and people would ask about my hair-care routine. I began to blog about it and saw how much I enjoyed helping and inspiring others. I love that I can help and inspire others in any way I can.”
On the best piece of advice she’s ever received. “To stay true to yourself and always remain humble.”
On her perfect day in New York. “There’s always something to do in NYC. One of my favorite things is to walk aimlessly in Soho and the Village and just admire the architecture. I also love going to the park, especially in Brooklyn. Prospect Park is huge and has great trails.”
On her go-to photo-editing app. “I love Photoshop’s Lightroom. It lets me adjust the color settings and fine-tune the pictures without overdoing it.”
