Meet the former model encouraging women to see that healthy is the new skinny

After working as a model for 15 years, Katie Willcox decided to shift her focus and help women prioritize health over the beauty ideal. In 2011, she launched Healthy Is the New Skinny, a blog dedicated to promoting a positive body image and lifestyle for women all over the world. “My work in the modeling industry taught me how narrow the spectrum of beauty is compared to real life,” Willcox says. “It causes a lot of harm to young women and I want to see that change.” Now, Willcox not only runs her site full-time, but she is also the founder of Natural Model Management, an L.A.-based modeling agency that encourages models to maintain a natural and healthy weight. Then she spends any spare time hosting events and workshops to teach others how to improve their body image and embrace self-love. We caught up with the model turned beauty activist to find out how she spends a typical day.

On her perfect day in Palm Springs. “I love spending time with my family [including her one-year-old daughter] and not doing any work! We love to go out into the desert to ride our four-wheelers, hike or just have a picnic. We also spend a lot of time in the water. It’s tough to beat the weather and energy here, so we’re happy to call the Palm Springs area home.”

On a life hack she swears by. “Always always have baby wipes with you. They have saved the day on more than one occasion!”

On something no one knows about her. “I love space and science. I believe in aliens and all kinds of things that most people find strange. It just makes sense to me.”

On how she balances the range of roles on her plate. “It is really difficult! But I have a really great team of people working with me and my husband Bradford who always supports me in all that I do. I try to take time to focus on each thing individually until they are in working order and then I shift my focus to the next thing. That is the best way for me to not get overwhelmed and feel like I am never doing enough.”
