During the summer months, all we want to do is put our hair up and away from our faces. The warm weather is a recipe for poofy, frizzy locks, so we often rock a bun for comfort and convenience. But this year, we're elevating the classic updo with something slightly edgier and more intricate. We asked celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho about the latest trend because honey, this isn't your average bun.
The Only Hair Trend We Care About This Summer Is Also the Easiest to Pull Off
Meet the Expert
Jenny Cho is a celebrity hairstylist based in Los Angeles. She specializes in styling and cutting with an emphasis in texture. Her clients include Jennifer Lawerence, Stephanie Hsu, HoYeon Jung, Ana De Armas, Kristen Bell and Sandra Oh.
What Is An Intricate Bun?
The keyword here is intricate. There are plenty of variations that go beyond just wrapping your ponytail in one direction and calling it a day. This style adds dimension and details, elevating your hair to new heights.
Why Is This Look So Popular?
"Intricate buns are popular right now because of the versatility of the style. It's a way of putting a modern twist on a classic updo that pulls the whole look together," says Cho. We saw these intricate styles during Fashion Week from designers like Jason Wu, Saint Laurent, Badgley Mischka and Christian Siriano. Intricate buns were also sported by numerous celebrities during awards season, and most recently, the Met Gala.
How to Recreate An Intricate Bun
There are no limits to creating an intricate bun. As Cho mentioned, it's a versatile look that complements any hair length, type or texture. To get started, we recommend investing in some styling cream to smooth down your hair and prevent any flyways, a few bobby pins to pin down any sections and a finishing hairspray to add shine and reduce frizz. Ready to get styling? Ahead, are four popular intricate bun looks that are super easy to create this summer.
1. Spiky Bun
We predicted this style was going to be big in 2023 and it's still going strong—see Vanessa Hudgens above. The '90s look involves leaving a few wispy pieces out of your bun. You can go for the slicked-back style like Hudgens or simply add some soft face-framing tendrils.
2. Rose Bun
The rose bun made a splash earlier this spring and continues to be popular as we head into the summer. This modern take on a classic ballerina bun was seen all over Fashion Week, and resembles a three-dimensional rose (hence, the name). As Jimmy Paul, head stylist for the Jason Wu Fall 2023 show, told Allure, "The sleekness of the bun elevates the look from hair that's been pulled back quickly just to get it out of the face. It's sexy and dramatic."
To recreate the look, TikToker Jenny Peña did a quick three-step process that consists of parting the hair into three sections (making sure they're each different sizes), braiding each section before wrapping them around the ponytail using bobby pins to secure everything into place.
3. Tinkerbell Bun
Is anyone else immediately transported into a Disney movie looking at this chic bun? The tousled updo gets the top knot treatment and is paired with full fringe and wavy tendrils that don't require any further magic to recreate the style.
4. Add Details
To quickly jazz up your bun, Cho suggests addingdetails like styled edges and various accessories (i.e., hair clips, jazzy bobby pins and chic headbands) to turn a regular bun into a glamorous statement.
