How to Straighten Your Hair...Without Heat
The number one advice stylists give to ladies with damaged or fragile hair is to lay off the heat. Easier said than done, right? (Do they just expect you to walk around with an unkempt nest on your head?) Turns out, there are some strategic ways to get your strands to lie smoother and straighter without any flatirons or blow-dryers.
1. Switch to the Right Shampoo and Conditioner
If smooth and straight is what you seek, then that’s what you should look for in your shampoo and conditioner as well. You want something that’s creamy and moisturizing—look for those words on the label.
2. Use a Smoothing Cream or Serum
After washing your hair, squeeze out as much extra moisture as possible before applying a smoothing cream from the mid-lengths to ends. If you have fine hair, mist a lightweight leave-in conditioner all over and use a serum or oil on just the ends instead.
3. Blast the Cold Setting on Your Hair Dryer
OK, we know we said no blow dryers, but the cold setting on your dryer can actually help you get a faster, smoother finish without any damage. Just point the nozzle down and apply tension with your fingers or a brush to coax it straight as it dries.
4. Try Jumbo Rollers
Ladies with longer hair can benefit from a set of jumbo rollers as well. After washing and towel-drying your hair, wrap even sections around rollers and secure them to your head with a clip on either side. Once it’s completely dry, take them out.
5. Always End with Anti-Frizz Serum or Spray
Last but not least, protect your hair from the elements with an anti-frizz serum or spray so it’s less likely to puff up throughout the day. We swear by this one from Garnier because it zaps flyaways immediately and never feels too heavy or greasy.
