The rain has been relentless lately and we’re sick of spending all that time straightening our hair only to show up at the office looking like a wet dog. The good news is that this year’s beauty trends will have you looking fresh in the most low-maintenance ways. In fact, these five tips might be the easiest (and, in our humble opinion, most fun) resolutions you can make. Try a new hairstyle, nail polish or hair color and say good-bye to the winter blues.

GET A MOB

The messy bob is an update on the “little black dress” of haircutting, according to Michael Forrey of Sassoon Salon. It’s basically a classic bob with exaggerated texture. But before you pull the trigger, he recommends talking to your stylist about the shape that will best complement your hair texture, lifestyle and daily beauty routine. After all, effortless chic is king in San Francisco.

GIVE CHROME NAILS A WHIRL

This trend takes metallic nails up a notch, and the smooth, mirrorlike surface looks surprisingly refined. Getting that chrome finish requires a gel polish base and a special powder that is carefully buffed on top in thin layers and sealed with topcoat. Ask if your salon offers the service—or try one of these cult-favorite polishes to get a similar effect at home.

GO FOR THE NO-HEAT LOOK

Ladies, it’s time to embrace your natural texture. Rather than trying to coax your hair into submission with a curling wand or flatiron, work a little product into your freshly washed strands and let it do its thing—whether that’s messy waves, soft ringlets, straight or something in between.

ADD A SWIPE OF CHEEK COLOR

A subtle hint of makeup goes a long way in SF, so we couldn’t be happier that contouring is out. Instead, try poppy pinks or vivid corals and concentrate the color along your temples and the tops of your cheeks to keep things light and lifted.

TRY ASH BLOND HAIR

In the winter, clothing tends to shift to warmer hues. Nathan Booth of Sassoon Salon suggests complementing this warmer look with cooler hair—like ashy, bordering-on-gray locks. "Combine shades of oyster blond with a light cashmere for subtle, head-turning shine,” he says. Another reason to try it? Dark roots are actually encouraged because they add dimension to the look, which is just the kind of low-maintenance upkeep we like.
