Looking for a little lift in the hair department? It all starts in the shower. Since we already got you covered with the best volumizing shampoos, we’re here to help you with part two: the best conditioners for thin hair. We consulted with three pro hairstylists to uncover what they are, including picks that won’t weigh down your strands, but will make them look lush and bouncy. Here’s what we learned, along with our recommendations to suit a range of hair types and needs.

Meet the Experts:

  • Bridget Brager, a celebrity hairstylist in Los Angeles
  • Harry Josh, a celebrity hairstylist and founder of Harry Josh Pro Tools
  • Connor Daniels, a stylist at Mirror Mirror Salon in Austin, Texas

How should I approach shopping for conditioner if I have fine hair?

“Using the wrong conditioner can leave your hair feeling flat, greasy or dry. Luckily, this can be avoided if you know what to look for,” assures Daniels. To that end, there are a few ingredients he says to avoid: sulfates, formaldehyde, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dimethicone. “These ingredients can leave your hair feeling dehydrated and can even increase frizz and cause breakage,” he warns. “And in the case of dimethicone, which is a type [of] silicone that makes your hair feel smoother initially, it can dry out your hair in the long run and cause build-up at your roots, which will weigh things down,” he explains.

Brager agrees, adding that you should also steer clear of conditioners that are “high in alcohol content,” which can be super drying. “These conditioners zap the moisture from your hair, making it feel more voluminous for the day, but long-term use will cause breakage and damage to thin hair, which is usually more fragile to begin with,” she cautions.

Got it. Are there any specific ingredients I should look for in a conditioner?

“When shopping for a conditioner, look for ingredients such as amino acids, silk peptides or skin care ingredients, like bio ceramides, hyaluronic acid and omegas, which will help improve hydration, without sacrificing on volume,” advises Brager.

Any other tips for conditioning thin hair?

Two things: You don’t want to use too much conditioner; you only need a nickel-size amount at most. And when it comes to the application, focus the conditioner on your mid-lengths and ends only, where your hair is driest and skip the roots.

The 13 Best Conditioners for Thin Hair at a Glance

Most Nourishing

1. KMS MoistRepair Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Expert-approved, ingredients support growth

According to Josh: “If your hair is thin or thinning, it’s important to find conditioners that will help nourish your hair without weighing it down. You’ll also want to look for ingredients that will support the internal strand of the hair to help it grow.” His pick? KMS MoistRepair conditioner because it “has lactic acid and aloe vera for added nourishment.”

The Cult Classic

2. Fekkai Full Blown Volume Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Revitalizing ingredients, won't weight down hair

Infused with citrus extract and ginseng and scented with mint and fruit, Fekkai’s volumizing conditioner is meant to give body to limp or fine hair. According to one loyal fan, it delivers, too. “No matter how many conditioners I try, I eventually come back to this one and it leaves my hair looking glossy and fuller without being weighed down.”

Best for Smoothing

3. The Rodan + Fields Volume+ Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Hair-plumping ingredients

“If you have fine or thinning hair, another ingredient to keep an eye out for is acetyl glutamine, which plumps the hair shaft,” shares Brager. This conditioner from Rodan+Fields features the ingredient, plus bio ceramide molecules that add fullness while leaving hair feeling smoother.

Best Natural Formula

4. Rahua Voluminous Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Vegan formula, improves shine

If voluminous is in the name, we expect body and bounce after every wash. Luckily, this conditioner lives up to its claims. The vegan formula includes rahua, lavender and eucalyptus oils to strengthen strands and improve shine, while balancing an oily scalp.

Best Scent

5. Ouai Fine Hair Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Lightweight, smells great

The last thing you want is a product that further weighs your hair down and causes even more build-up on your scalp. Thankfully, the lightweight formula of this Ouai conditioner nourishes even the finest strands using biotin, keratin and chia seed oil. Plus, the scent—a blend of lemon, jasmine and white musk—will make your strands (and shower) smell like a dream.

Editor’s Pick

6. Living Proof Full Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Adds softness, preserves color, UV protection

This lightweight conditioner adds softness and shine while helping flat hair to look and feel fuller, thanks to amaranth peptides in the formula. It’s also safe to use on color-treated or chemically processed hair, and in fact, has phytantriol, an ingredient that preserves hair color and reduces the damaging effects from heat styling and environmental factors like UV exposure and pollution. As one reviewer shares, “This conditioner smells amazing and leaves my hair super soft and shiny without that heavy, oily feeling. I won't use anything else.”

Most Lightweight

7. Goldwell Kerasilk Repower Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Expert-approved, boosts elasticity

Josh is a fan of the Goldwell Kerasilk Repower foaming conditioner. “The foam texture is perfect for thin hair since it won’t add too much extra weight, and the formula itself enhances resilience and elasticity in the hair over time,” he explains.

Best for Curly Hair

8. Ouidad Curl Quencher Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Long-lasting, hydrating

We want our conditioner to have a strong hold, yet not feel heavy on our curls. This pick keeps your strands hydrated without weighing them down and feeling greasy. The proteins and vitamins combo assures tight curls, and fine hair will get the moisture it’s looking for.

Best Drugstore Conditioner

9. L'Oreal Paris EverStrong Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Affordable, provides softness

We love a good drugstore steal, and this one is exceptional. Wrapping every strand in creamy nourishment, this conditioner delivers noticeable softness while providing the type of lift you normally only see in hair commercials (with a refreshing herbal scent to boot). All that for less than the price of a salad from that fancy health-food store you love? Sold.

Best for Oily Scalps

10. Biolage Scalp Sync Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Great for buildup, tingly sensation

This salon-favorite conditioner tackles excess oils and product buildup that’s sitting on your scalp (which can cause that limp, greasy feeling). Featuring mint leaf, it also lends a nice, tingly sensation whenever you use it. As one enthusiastic reviewer shares, “I have [an] oily scalp [and] dry ends, and it completely balanced [things out]. It's very lightweight, but I was amazed at how much it moisturized [my hair].”

Best for Thickening

11. Aveda Invati Advanced Thickening Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Makes hair stronger, proven ingredients

This nutrient-rich conditioner has been lauded for strengthening thin strands and improving volume over time. It includes organic alma, plant oils and naturally derived amino acids, which have been shown to thicken and strengthen hair.

Best Leave-In

12. Alterna Caviar Clinical Densifying Scalp Treatment

  • Why We Love It: Great for shine

After a good wash, careful styling is equally as important to the health of your hair. Enter the daily leave-in, which boasts Alterna’s signature formula featuring caviar extract. Spray it over damp strands to restore elasticity and moisture, while boosting shine and fullness.

Best Splurge

13. Christophe Robin Delicate Volumizing Conditioner

  • Why We Love It: Fragrant, great for color-treated hair

OK, we know this one’s a bit of a splurge, but we have it on good authority that it’s the real deal. Christophe Robin’s formula is enriched with rose water and fortifying baobab extract to cleanse, preserve color and restore volume. It has a pretty heavy rose aroma and will leave your bathroom smelling heavenly, but heads up if strong fragrances aren’t your thing.
