San Francisco's Guide to Summer Beauty
8 tips and tricks to help you look (and feel) your best this season
Summer in the Bay Area means more cardigans than cutoffs. But it doesn’t mean you should still follow your same old cold-weather beauty regimen. Check out our quick guide to updating your summer routine and staying fresh all season long.
Wear Sunscreen (It's Nonnegotiable)
The sun’s UV rays are present even in the fog. If you use a chemical sunscreen (look for ingredients likeoxybenzone, avobenzone or Helioplex), apply it before all other skin-care products to ensure it is absorbed properly. If you wear a mineral sunscreen (check the label for words like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), apply it as the last step of your skin-care regimen.
Spritz Your Face
Step away from the alcohol-based toner. That stuff strips your skin, actually causing it to produce more oil. (Who knew?) Instead, try combining distilled water with six to ten drops of pure rose oil to soothe redness and irritation. Spray this onto your face for a little afternoon pick-me-up.
Stick to Simple Eye Makeup
The trick to looking beautiful but keeping your routine fuss-free? COVERGIRL’s Full Lash Bloom Lashblast™ Mascara ($5). Designed to give you soft, full lashes without any traces of flaking or smudging, this product is ideal for keeping you fresh-faced all day long, no matter that unpredictable summer weather.
Perk Up with Peppermint Soap
On those cool, dreary days when it’s difficult to get out of bed, try adding an invigorating scent like peppermint or tea tree oil into your shower routine. It’s guaranteed to keep you from feeling like a zombie at 9 a.m.
Use Coconut Oil to Tame Frizz
Those chronic flyaways that frame your face as soon as the temp rises above 60 degrees? Yeah, they need to go. For an easy fix, just slick them back using a spare toothbrush and a little coconut oil.
Master Day-to-Night Hair
Brush damp hair into a topknot for the office (use a Mane Message soft hair tie), and then shake your tresses into beachy waves once happy hour hits.
Say No to Sweat Stains
Pit stains happen to the best of us. Luckily, there’s an easy trick for getting rid of them. Just spray some lemon juice on the affected areas right before washing. Voilà!
Fight the Funk
Wearing sneakers is decidedly on trend, but the scent of going sockless…well, it’s one we could do without. Keep a can of baking powder on hand and sprinkle a little into your shoes before your slip them on. This should help absorb odors and keep your feet from getting too sweaty throughout the day.
